A reveiw of the KroaKing finals

As requested by Vivek Madan, here is a review of the Kraoking finals at Opus. It is my penance as I ended up not getting a bill at the end of the evening. I was presented with a bill, but it had lots of food on and I had eaten before I arrived, so there was some confusion. However, I had several beers, that seemed to get cooler and cooler as the night wore on, which made me drink more and more (Is this an Opus ploy?), as the night got hotter and hotter. And what a night! Not privy to any of the previous rounds, it was an amazing evening, and so, mea culpa, here is a review (so you don’t have to write one!)

Thank heavens, the judges got it right. The deserved winner was Megha, and, in my opinion, for her outstanding performance of “Lady Marmalade”. Orangey in all the right places, and which received the most spontaneous standing ovation of the evening. One cannot fail to draw comparisons with American Idol, when the choice of song really matters. Her second song was not in the same category - try a Bette Midler song next time (not that she needs a next time now!) I was disappointed Mark didn’t get a higher placing: his Joe Cocker Song in the first round was truly great, a real character voice, full of swallowed ashtrays (a la Tom Waits). Again, his second round choice didn’t connect in the same way.

It was interesting that it was the real performers who got through to the final six: those who didn’t use the song sheet, thereby not presenting the audience (absolutely packed) with their backs. That is a real loser. The performer of the night was Barry, who truly connected with the audience. His first round number was really wacky and mesmerising. For all my catholic knowledge of music, I hadn’t got a clue what the song was, but it was very entertaining. His final number started brilliantly, but he probably lost out as his energy drained in the middle of the very long rap. Perhaps there should be a time limit in the finals. But I take my hat off to his energy and bravado. Anoopa: I was watching you on the big screen and it was your feet that let you down. Shuffle, shuffle, shuffle, like Kate Moss on acid (am I allowed to say that?). But bravo for going for a big Broadway number, “Mama” from “Chicago”, which was brave, but the song was bigger than you, I’m afraid. And a general note to all, even when squeezing every ounce out of your body to get the high notes, if you close your eyes, you will not communicate to your audience. Eyes say it all. Vivek Madan, bless him, knows he hasn’t got the greatest voice in the world, but he communicated by directing his performance, even with eyes hidden by glasses and hazed by a mist of rum, straight out to the audience. And congratulations to him (another hat he wears is as the lighting man) for getting the lighting right, so everyone, even right at the back, could see the performers.

A very memorable evening by all finalists - congratulations to all, and enhanced by guest performances from the panel of judges: Avril Quadros, Stanley Pinto, Mark Rego, Samira and of course, the host of the evening, Carlton Braganza, who sang “Bad Day” as if it was, and probably was, one of the best days of his life. He and his wife, Gina, have made Opus into something Bangalore should be very proud of. The tension of the evening was heightened by the fact that we were all wondering if we would ever get to the end before the police arrived and close the place down at the ridiculous curfew time directed by Karnatakan law. (Wake up, this is a cosmopolitan city!) Fortunately, we got there without incident.I hope Opus have made enough profit out of the evening (yes, please send me my bill, I will pay it!) to invest in a better sound system. They did the best with what they had, but I hope there is a wonderful philanthropist out there willing to sponsor them with a wonderful system (and sound engineer) so that such evenings can reach the stars!

Well said, Chris.

However,in my opinion,it is extremely unfair to pick on one person's song which was bigger than her, especially since the songs chosen by the participants were way bigger than all of them.

All in all, a super night. I don't understand why Opus has chosen to screen FOOTBALL of all games on Sunday, instead of continuing the Kroak nights tradition.

What a night: it was fantastic to hear twelve talented singers belting it out and unleashing their energies: simply superb. The energies in the semis seemed better: probably the final six were exhausted, having put out their best to make it to the finals.

Megha, Anupa and Mark (in that order) were my picks for the evening: hats off (no pun intended) to Anupa to attempt RESPECT, and boy did you do it well.

I was disappointed in the judges in the finals. Performance (poor performance, at that) got voted over singing and clarity, and that was shocking. I can't understand how a guy who runs out of breath and doesn't even finish a song gets voted in the first three, and how a guy who sings Desert Rose flat (most of the while) makes it to second grade. These guys can sing much better, but on the final performance alone, Mark deserved a far, far better place than he got.

Bravo Opus, here's to more!

I second Chitra, well said Chris...
However perhaps more could/should be said?

A)The Judges:
What was that all about? Let's just say what everyone is or should be thinking. Who on earth put Vinoj (Slim Shady) into the finals? I can understand judges having their individual opinions on something, but surely we witness something out of the ordinary here. Anoopa ties with Vinoj; to quote a Ghostbuster "From the sublime to the ridiculous". Never was a truer line spoken. So how'd you judges get that, oh, SO wrong? Come on, own up, who did it??

B)The final Round of 6:
Let's face it, the judges judged on the first round, NOT the final round. What's the final round for then i wonder?

C)Performance:
Shady, you said it, most the people who tried to perform were very sad, they were bad performances mostly, Barry, one of those that "performs" a lot has got it right, he is a great performer, but the wannabe Elvis, that was no good! that is not performance! That's just silly!

D)Judge Performances:
Maybe the tables should be turned?
Enough said...

E)My Choice:
1st place: Megha
2nd place: Anoopa or Barry
3rd Place: Mark or Barry

F)I expected much more from Arfaaz, Jacob and Amrutha. These are good singers, i guess you guys had a bad day ;)

G)Conclusion:
It's not a professional competition, which includes the judges, it's just fun, it means little... but is to be enjoyed...

H)There's more i'd like to say but i'm tired now...

Yep. completely in agreement with just somebody. From the looks of it, there needn't have been a 'finals' at all.

Anyways, check out Mark on the Cd. He is simply outstanding! The best.

I will say something that I think needs to be said, something thats been eating at me since this debate began.

Vinoj, my man, you came there to do what wanted to do. And you did it. None of this is your fault, i hope you realise that. Although it might seem like we're bashing you, we're not. (And I think i speak for everyone with this) All the best buddy. You won your place. Whether it was a just decision or not can and will be debated for as long as people wish to.

And if you want someone to share that booze with, you know whom to call. :-)

I guess have to have my say in all of this... Vinoj my man....like Vivek said this is definitely not your fault or anything of that sort... You performed what you liked and it seems like you had a blast... well done and congratulations... Pl include me in that drinking session by the way...

For some people the music leads the showmanship and for others the show is the ultimate focus.... and neither one is wrong, its just a difference in choice and approach... Im guessing the judges were picking one from the other... so thats that.

Thanks to the JWT crowd (you'll always be the best), Chris, Chitra, Shady and the rest.... It was one of my best nights ever and i will cherish it for a long time to come.

God gave Rock'n Roll to ya...He put it in the soul of everyone - KISS

Yes, have to say, Vinoj, nothing against you, you did your thing, it was whacky, it was funny, but truth be told, i'm not sure you don't disagree with the results yourself...

Enough of that then...

GB, i haven't heard the original Let Her Cry, but i really think Mark sounds great on the CD.

Judgement on the CD:
1: Arfaaz
2: Megha
3: Anoopa
4: Barry
5: Mark
6: Vivek
7: Amrutha
8: Jacob
9: Namrata
10:Serena
11:Vinoj
12:Santosh

That's a varying order, all are interchangeable by one, two or three places.
Bye bye, looking forward to the next Kroaking Competition.

Pat your backs Gina, Shonali and Carlton!
